Baby Capybarra

I forgot to mention in my description of visiting the jungle about my encounter with a baby capybara. The capybara is the largest rodent in the world, indigenous to South America. It looks a little like a cross between a guinea pig and a hippopotamus.

Feb. 28th Friday, after we had just arrived at the Shuar village and were kicking around the soccer ball with the little kids, the Shaman of the tribe appeared with a small black animal in his hands. It took a moment to recognize it, but we soon realized it was a baby capybara ("Watusa" in Shuar). It was a pet that belonged to the Shaman, although the children were allowed to play (read: harass) the little animal as well. It was amusing to watch this small creature waddle around on the grass, although there were many times when someone would be holding, petting or harassing it. It enjoyed resting on my shoulders, hidden from the ninos behind my hair.

There's a children’s book, "Capyboppy", written and illustrated by Bill Peet, the true story of a capybara who lived with the Peet family. I remember reading this book as a child, and thinking that someday I would like to meet a real one.

I have a photo of this little critter. Let me know if you would like me to e-mail it to you.
