Friday, May 9, 2003 - 7:34 p.m. Food, glorious food! If you're curious as to what Ecuadorian food is like, well, first of all, let me ask you…How many Ecuadorian restaurants do you know of? I don’t mean to criticize my host country, but I don’t think many people would argue that Ecuadorian food is the most varied or creative cuisine. It consists of mainly rice, soup and meat. However, having said that, I’ve found the soup here to be really tasty. My favorite kind is a traditional soup made of potato, cheese and avocado. Also, there is no such thing as “low fat” foods. Milk, butter, cheese, you name it. Hence, I must confess that this has not been the best thing for my waistline! The other shining star in Ecuadorian cuisine is the juice. It is absolutely fab. When my family was visiting they discovered the tree tomato, a kind of fruit distantly related to the tomatoes we are familiar with. But it tastes very different. My favorite fruit is maracuya, which is passion fruit. I love to make maracuya juice with our (temperamental) blender when I can find the fruit at the market!
