Monday, May 31, 2004 - 11:30 p.m. Referencing a post I made Aug. 17 2003... Comparing City Populations (see below for original post) It appears I need to do more research. My Geography coursebook gives different numbers for city populations, as of the year 2000. OK. So obviously populations have changed a little in the last 4 years, but my margin of error is a little out of whack with some of these cities (like, say Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico city, etc). In fact, the only population that both sources agreed on was Sao Paulo, Brazil! So after my school term ends and I actually have some free time, I will look into this and try to have more accurate numbers. By the way, the main source for my original numbers was from the Lonely Planet website. I really do not know which is a more reliable source, LP or my Geography textbook, published this year. Feel free to e-mail me if you have firsthand knowledge that is more accurate than my sources, like those of you living in Tokyo and Paris (you know who you are!) So, here's what my course textbook says... Tokyo, Japan----------26.4 million Mexico City, Mexico-----18 million Sao Paulo, Brazil-------17 million NYC, NY, USA---------16.6 million LA area, CA, USA------13 million Buenos Aires, Argentina--12.6 million Osaka, Japan-----------11 million Rio de Janeiro, Brazil---10.6 million --------------------------------------- ORIGINAL POST... Walking around Lima for the last few days has made me start to wonder about other city populations...So, I've done a little bit of research online and (mostly focusing on cities that I've been to), here's what I found out... Lima, Peru--------------8 million Quito, Ecuador--------1.5 million Guayaquil, Ecuador-------3 million Cuenca, Ecuador---------0.3 million Buenos Aires, Argentina--16 million Santiago, Chile---------5 million Rio de Janeiro, Brazil---7 million Sao Paulo, Brazil-------17 million Mexico City, Mexico-----22 million London, England-------12 million Paris, France------almost 11 million Rome, Italy----------3.6 million Athens, Greece-------3.7 million Sydney, Australia-----4 million NYC, NY, USA---------18 million LA area, CA, USA------9.9 million Tokyo, Japan----------12 million Osaka, Japan-----------8.8 million Seattle, WA, USA------0.5 million King County, WA, USA-----1.7 million
I'm sure there's some margin of error, but it was interesting to do this comparison...Also, I realize that some cities are more spread out than others. I'm sure Tokyo is a lot more condensed than other cities and Athens felt a whole lot more crowded than Paris did...
